Gear & Essentials
Essential gear for dragon boating
Paddles:
Each paddler needs a dragon boat paddle. Paddles come in various sizes and materials, such as carbon fiber, wood, or fiberglass. The club provides paddles for use during practice if needed.
Personal Flotation Device (PFD):
A properly fitted life jacket or PFD approved for use in water sports and dragon boating is essential for safety. The club has spare life jackets to loan if paddlers forget theirs.
Clothing:
Wear moisture-wicking and quick-drying clothing suitable for the weather conditions. Generally, comfortable athletic attire is preferred, but layering will leave you without regrets rain or shine. Teams have specific uniforms for races and events.
Water Shoes:
Footwear that can get wet and provide traction on the boat is recommended for comfort and safety.
Sun Protection:
Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses with a strap to shield yourself from the sun's rays during practice or races.
Safety Equipment:
Paddlers are encouraged to carry a whistle. Your coaches and captains manage other safety equipment.
Hydration:
WATER... WATER... WATER... A reusable water bottle (preferably not metal or glass) is highly encouraged regardless of weather.
Teamwork and Positive Attitude:
While not physical gear, a cooperative and enthusiastic mindset is crucial for successful and enjoyable dragon boating sessions.
Always check with your team or event organizers for any additional equipment or specific requirements they might have for practices or races.
